The Perfect Storm 2026
At The Shona Project, our work is shaped by what young people are really experiencing.
This research explores the pressures, challenges and hopes of teenagers across Ireland today. Building on our years of work supporting girls, we are now widening the conversation to include boys too, recognizing that teenage boys also encounter unique pressures and barriers that impact their mental health, self-esteem, and future opportunities.
By listening to teenagers aged 12 to 19, this research helps us better understand what life feels like for young people right now. It looks at the challenges they share, the ways their experiences differ, and what they need from the adults, schools and communities around them.
These insights will help shape practical programmes, resources and supports that build confidence, resilience and equality for all teenagers.
The research was carried out through an online survey, giving young people a space to share what life feels like for them today.
The survey explored both the positive and more difficult parts of teenage life, including experiences at home, in school, online and in their wider communities.
It covered topics that matter to young people right now, from friendships, relationships and school pressure, to physical and emotional wellbeing, identity, belonging, race, religion, sexual orientation and hopes for the future.
